The sister of the Queen of the Netherlands has been found hanged in her apartment in an apparent suicide.
The Dutch government has confirmed that Queen Maximaâs younger sister, Ines Zorreguieta, 33, was found dead yesterday in Buenos Aires.
A spokesperson for the Dutch Embassy in Argentina said: ‘They (local authorities) assume that it is a case of suicide.â
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte described it as ‘intensely sad and heartbreaking news.â
He added: ‘The sudden passing away of Queen Maximaâs sister comes as a great shock. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Queen and her family.
‘I wish them all the strength they need to cope with this horrible loss. I trust that they will be afforded the space and privacy they need.â
Ms Zorreguieta reportedly suffered from depression and mental health problems.
Her body was removed from her apartment this morning and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place in due course.
Queen Maxima, 47,Â has reportedly cancelled all of her upcoming engagements and is due to fly to her native Argentina later today.
She, her husband and their three children last flew to Argentina in 2017 for the funeral of her and Ms Zorreguietaâs father, who died from cancer at 89.
Ms Zorreguieta worked for the Argentine government as an official in the Ministry of Social Development.
She was also godmother to Queen Maximaâs 11-year-old daughter Princess Ariane and the youngest daughter of Jorge Zorreguieta and MarÃa del Carmen Cerruti.
Queen Maxima is the wife of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, who ascended to the throne in 2013.
