Iranâs supreme leader claims Donald Trump lied more than 10 times as he announced the US is pulling out of the nuclear deal.
In the most severe breakdown of relations between the two countries since they signed the Obama-era accord in 2015, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threw down the gauntlet to Trump.
He didnât specifically say what the president had allegedly lied about, but challenged him directly, saying: ‘You cannot do a damn thing!â
Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters in the Islamic republic, warned that Trumpâs remarks threatened Iranâs people and its theocratic government.
It comes after Iranian politicians set a US flag ablaze in parliament and shouted ‘Death to Americaâ after Trumpâs withdrawal from the nuclear deal.
As well as the paper flag, they also burned a piece of paper representing the deal, in a display said to reflect public anger over Trumpâs decision.
Trump immediately imposed sanctions on Iran, while Iran president Hassan Rouhani declared the country will enrich uranium ‘more than beforeâ if negotiations fail in response to the US withdrawing.
Speaking after Donald Trumpâs announcement, President Rouhani said there was a ‘short timeâ to negotiate with the countries who remain committed to a multinational nuclear deal.
He said: ‘If we achieve the dealâs goals in cooperation with other members of the deal, it will remain in place⦠By exiting the deal, America has officially undermined its commitment to an international treaty.
‘I have ordered Iranâs atomic organisation that whenever it is needed, we will start enriching uranium more than before.â
He said Iran would start this ‘in the next weeksâ.
